The following is a report of section activities to date as of 4/15/05:
MLA Goal 1: Recruitment, Membership, and Leadership in the Profession
The Membership Committee sent targeted emails to encourage members to join the Section’s email discussion list, to encourage current members to renew their membership, and to welcome new members to the Section.
MLA Goal 2: Life Long Learning
The Program Committee is coordinating lead sponsorship for a session “Diversity in Collection Development” for MLA ’05. Co-sponsors are the CAM SIG, Chiropractic Section, LGBT SIG, and Dental Section. This is an invited speaker session.
We will co-sponsor a session “Impact of Open Access Publishing.” Lead sponsor is Cancer Librarians and the other co-sponsors are Technical Services Section and Research Section. This is an invited and contributed paper session.
We will also co-sponsor a session “Digitization, Preservation and Authentication of Resources.” Lead sponsor is the Federal Libraries Section and the other co-sponsor is History of Health Sciences Section. This is an invited and contributed paper session.
MLA Goal 3: Advocacy
The Awards Committee published a call for nominations for the Daniel T. Richards Award in the section newsletter, and it was also distributed to the Chapter and Section Council representatives for publication in Chapter and Section newsletters and email discussion lists. It was also sent to MEDLIB-L. The Committee awarded the prize to Joann E. Donatiello, Peter W. Droese and Soo H. Kim for their article, “A selected, annotated list of materials that support the development of policies designed to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities” J Med Libr Assoc. 2004 April; 92(2): 257–265.
MLA Goal 4: Creating and Communicating our Knowledge
At MLA ’04, the Section sponsored a symposium on e-journal archiving. The final report was written by the symposium’s organizing chairs and published as “Seize the E-Journal: Models for Archiving symposium: report.” Kubilius RK, Walton LJ. J Med Libr Assoc. 2005 Jan; 93(1): 126-129.
The Newsletter Editor published one issue of our newsletter, Developments, in Fall 2004 and will publish another in Spring 2005.
The Continuing Education Committee has been working on the conceptual format for a primer on medical collection development, to be hosted on our Website. The original tutorial did not look promising, nor did the FAQ format. The CE Committee feels that a wiki may be the ideal option, but Headquarters would have to implement this software for the Section. In addition, Linda Walton and Ramune Kubilius who are teaching a CE course (called Health Sciences Collection Development: A Holistic Approach) at the 2005 annual meeting have shared their initial course outline draft and have corresponded with the chair of the Continuing Education Committee about the collection development primer.
Because of extra work duties, our Website Editor stepped down in April. At this point, the Section needs a volunteer to manage the site. The Editor reports continuing problems with the site hosting software requiring a password for viewing access. She has been working with headquarters in trying to find a solution.
The Website Content Committee will further develop the Website as a resource for those interested in our specialty, and to encourage sharing of individually developed collection development evaluation instruments. One instrument on comparing approval plans has been submitted.
The MLANET Professional Toolbox now has links to our Website section on “Resources for Librarians and Subject-Based Resource Lists.”
